YT Obsession

In our modern era of “self-awareness” and irony, California’s Gold, a cable access show from the 90s, is a trove of unintentional comedy.

Of course, California’s Gold would be forgettable “edu-tainment” if it wasn’t for the indomitable, genuine interest of the host Huell Howser. His deep Tennessee drawl only adds to his yokle naivety. He is basically a Tim and Eric skit.

I only recently found out about Huell Howser but apparently, to my friends who are native Californians, Huell and his shows are primo substitute-teacher-puts-on-a-video-for-the-class fodder. Lucky kids.

Any episode of Visiting with Huell Howser or California’s Gold will restore your faith in humanity.

Watching and Listening

My partner and I just watched Blade from 1998.

Goddamn, what a cool movie. It looks cool, the soundtrack is cool, the characters dress cool and I constantly have to remind myself that this came out before The Matrix in 1999. Compared to modern Marvel movies, Blade is sexual, violent and dare I say; a bit twisted. One scene is giving PornHub “Not mom seduces not son.”

The way Wesley Snipes portrays titular character Blade, is textbook not cool (think high school anime nerd) but somehow, it just is cool. The line “Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice-skate uphill” is only cool in this movie. Just try to say that in any other context and see how long you last before you get a wedgie.

Lemme tell ya, to a 12yo in southern Indiana, this was the most wild music I had ever heard outside of the Mortal Combat. I bopped that OST for years. One of my greatest achievements as an adult is being at an actual rave, dancing to “blood rave” with hundreds of hot people (Sans blood, sadly). Needless to say, I rocked the OST during my gym my most recent gym visit.

Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s fun! I am legit role-playing a barbarian. I am rolling for intimidation, head-empty-no-thoughts killing everything. I highly recommend.
